These are my thoughts on the Academy Awards as they happen:
8:35 pm - Jon Stewart, hilarious. Love the Jewish jokes.
8:43 pm - Jennifer Garner has an emo haircut.
9:08 pm - Golden Compass visual effects guys brought a little note card? I don’t like people who bring notes for their speeches. Were you that sure you were gonna win? It must suck to throw those out unused.
9:12 pm - Another history montage? Surprise! Tonight we spell Oscar s-e-l-f i-n-d-u-l-g-e-n-t.
9:15 - Has anyone seen Jennifer Hudson since last year’s Oscars?
9:21 - Oscar salute to binoculars and periscopes…at least they’re aware of how self indulgent they are. Touche Oscars, touche.
9:44 - A lot of this prewritten presenter banter is awkward.
9:48 - How do the Oscars work? Hmmm. John Travolta explain it to me.
10:11 - Much love to international film community and actors tonight.
10:16 - Ipod touches and Wii…Let’s see how many jokes we can milk off of pop technology.
10:17 - Colin Farrell’s drunk.
10:24 - How can they spend this much time showing every Best Picture winner but not give people enough time to finish their speeches?!
10:29 - “Film Editing. Someone just took the lead in their Oscar pool based on a guess.” John Stewart is doing a bang up job.
10:40 - Foreign Picture. I’m still bitter Pan’s Labyrinth didn’t win last year.
10:43 - “The versatile and handsome Patrick Dempsey,” He’s well known because he’s good looking. How can that be me?
10:50 - I really need to see Once.
10:55 - Did they really bring the chick from Once back out?! Awkward. Good thing they didn’t play her off, again.
11:00 - In Memory Montage. Arguably my favorite part. I know this a horrible thing to say. But I just find it ridiculous that you can gage a persons celebrity based on how loud their applause is.
11:11 - Having the troops announce the nominees for Best Doc Short was pretty interesting. Why this category though?
11:30ish - Couple of predictable winners. Daniel Day Lewis, Juno…moving onto the big ones…
11:45 - No Country with the trifecta: script, director, picture. A bit anticlimactic but so it goes.
Despite my cynicism and sarcastic comments this Oscar broadcast was probably one of the better ones in recent years. I think it mostly has to do with Jon Stewart.
