HBO’s new dudecentric midlife crisis comedy Hung premiered on Sunday night. The genre is familiar territory for the Home Box Office, see Mind of The Married Man or Curb Your Enthusiasm. The set up should also ring some bells - the good, suburban parent falls into a life of crime (see Weeds, Breaking Bad.) But what sets it apart is the striking amount of heart. The pilot had some tender moments, and Thomas Jane as a basketball coach turned gigolo is extremely likable. While not as dry as its contemporaries, its funny enough to get by. It’s biggest fault is the voice over, Jane’s narration is so overstated and obvious that it insults the intelligence of the viewer. “It was the first time in a long time that I felt happy.” Did we really need that? No.
