Trailer: ‘Broadway Idiot’
So I just learned that a documentary was made about the creation of ‘American Idiot’ on Broadway and Billie Joe Armstrong’s journey to performing in it. AND that it will be premiering at SXSW.

Hanks’ producing partner Gary Goetzman spoke with THR regarding three high profile projects in motion at Playtone.
American Gods is an HBO series based on Neil Gaiman’s novel. It is said to be costing $35-40 million a year and will span six 10-12 episode seasons. The deity epic is slated for a 2013 premiere at the earliest.
Major Matt Mason will be a Robert Zemeckis directed, live action 3D adaptation of the Mattel toys property. Co-written by Hanks and Graham Yost, it is budgeted at over $100 million and will present a family film space adventure.
Finally we have American Idiot, the screen adaptation of Green Day’s Broadway musical and concept album. Slated for a 2013 release, original stage director and co-creator Michael Mayer will direct with Billie Joe Armstrong to reprise the role of St. Jimmy. Playtone is looking to recapture their previous success in the musical genre, Mamma Mia! which grossed over $600 million. Also of note, Goetzman owns the film rights to Spring Awakening, which they plan to produce in a more independent way.
In addition to the tour, productions of American Idiotare being explored for England, Europe, Japan and Australia.
The national tour of American Idiot will play the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles March 14-April 22, 2012, Center Theatre Group announced on March 2.
According to an Equity casting/audition notice, a touring production of the Michael Mayer-directed musical, with a score by Green Day, lyrics by front man Billie Joe Armstrong and libretto co-written by Mayer and Armstrong, will rehearse in the summer for an autumn launch.
If Green Day fans come out this could do well on the road.
Guarini will play Will, Havok will be Jimmy for two weeks. Other major cast shake ups include Van Hughes taking over as Johnny and Libby Winters as Extraordinary Girl.
That’s one way to keep from closing. Tickets are available now. He’ll be playing St. Jimmy again, starting January 1st through Feb 27th for a total of 50 performances.

The key word in the phrase was rumor. Anything posted with a “RUMOR:” tag in front of it should be taken with a grain of salt. There’s no official word and until there is, the show is open and will definitely fight to stay open. And everyone should go see it cause it’s amazing.
Every Broadway show (aside from surefire blockbusters) has trouble in January. That’s just a fact. I post a lot of rumors on here that end up being wrong, this is one that I very much hope goes down that same path. Now excuse me while I take my foot out of my mouth…
Sources tell me they have it on “good authority” that the show plans to close in January. If this is the case it would join the ranks of many other Broadway productions shutting down in the notoriously harsh post-holiday month. Idiot opened March 24th, 2010, won two Tonys and will have played 230 performances as of Nov. 7th.
