Under the new rules the Academy will nominate up to 10 films.

Best Picture
A film must receive at least 5% first place votes in the nominating process to qualify as one of the 5 to 10 nominees.  This is to ensure films with proper support make the final 10 and if not, there are less than 10 nominees.  The Academy worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers and discovered that if this rule had been in effect between 2001 and 2008 that some years, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 nominees, but not 10.  No one will know how many nominees there are until the nominations are announce on Jan. 24, 2012.

Golden Globe Winner vs Oscar Winner

awards-season:

Since 2004, there has been just one instance of the Golden Globe winner for Best Picture (Drama) going on to win the Oscar and that was in 2009 for Slumdog Millionaire. Here is how it has shaken up the other years -

2010 -

  • Golden Globe - Avatar
  • Oscar - The Hurt Locker

2009

  • Golden Globe - Slumdog Millionaire
  • Oscar - Slumdog Millionaire

2008

  • Golden Globe - Atonement
  • Oscar - No Country For Old Men

2007

  • Golden Globe - Babel
  • Oscar - The Departed

2006

  • Golden Globe - Brokeback Mountain
  • Oscar - Crash

2005

  • Golden Globe - The Aviator
  • Oscar - Million Dollar Baby

Therefore, the Golden Globes can’t really be considered a good prognosticator of things to come. Me? I’m thinking that The King’s Speech could triumph over The Social Network. While it is a possibility that the overwhelming sweep of awards by TSN could influence Golden Globes voters to “like” that film, so as not to seem out of touch, The King’s Speech is more the HFPA’s bag, so I say, watch out for a possible upset by Your Majesty. And TSN fans, don’t worry. As you can see, the Golden Globes don’t have much bearing on the Oscars.

Deadline reports that Hollywood is no longer spending the big bucks on campaigning for films to win Best Picture. This year especially, because essentially its only between two films (Avatar and The Hurt Locker.) Neither of them need the boost monetarily so it’s all for bragging rights.

Avatar wins at the Globes. Inglourious Basterds wins at the SAG Awards. And now The Hurt Locker takes the Producer’s guild. There is no clear front runner for the Oscar and that makes it one of the most exciting races in recent memory. All bets are off.
