Obviously, anyone can go out there and go, ‘F—-, f—-, f—-, c—-, c—-, c—-, piss, piss, piss,’ whatever. And, like, it’s not gonna do anything, unless at the root of it there is this heart and this soul,

The original Broadway cast recording of “The Book of Mormon” comes roaring back in at No. 3 with 61,000 sold (up 2,116%) following the show’s nine Tony Award wins on Sunday, June 12. It is the highest charting Broadway cast album — and first top 10 — since 1969, when “Hair” spent 13 straight weeks at No. 1.

And, with a whopping 61,000, “Mormon” owns the largest sales week for any cast album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. The previous best sales week for a cast set belonged to the original London cast recording of “Phantom of the Opera” (Highlights), which sold 54,000 over the Christmas week of 1992.

Of course this is due to the Tonys buzz and Amazon’s $1.99 sale which made up 85% of the 61k units sold. Still impressive though.

Today is the final day to nab this. Because as they say, “Tomorrow is a latter day.”

In my review of the previous incarnation of the show I wrote,

Most of the musical numbers are melody-less resting in a patent U2 minor key. That’s not to say there are a few memorable numbers with good melodies, and the show’s theme is super catchy. It also seems like no one told Bono and the Edge how to write a musical, as it lacks certain staples of musical theater that are just necessary for connecting with an audience (instead it provides high flying action sequences).

So judge for yourself. After a quick listen it seems the songs work a lot better recorded and this whole thing may have made a better concept album? Then again I don’t dislike U2 and might be biased.

A cast recording of the much-in-the-news musical Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark, which resumed performances May 12 at Broadway’s Foxwoods Theatre, will be released in June, according to Amazon.com.
