This is a down right shame. Let it be known that most of the blame should lay outside the execution of the film. Having just seen it, John Carter is a well-executed if flawed blockbuster in the traditional sense. It was leagues better than I was expecting and far superior to the more mindless, heartless blockbusters that constantly fill theaters. Andrew Stanton has a handle on the material and doesn’t completely blow his first live-action transfer.

Don’t write off John Carter because of bad marketing and financial buzz such as this, if you’re a fan of science fiction, fantasy, and adventure, you might actually enjoy it.

Also Michael Giacchino’s score is great.

Full Trailer: John Carter - March 9

Directed by Andrew Stanton, starring Taylor Kitsch, Mark Strong, Dominic West, Bryan Cranston, Willem Dafoe, and Lynn Collins.

This is not a bad trailer. In fact, it includes a lot of visually impressive, semi-original pieces and alludes to a compelling(ish) story. If only it weren’t so easy to draw comparisons to Avatar and the Star Wars prequels. I have faith in Stanton, who has more than proved his merit in animation, as well as the cast — but I will not be surprised when this ends up tanking for Disney.

Trailer: John Carter - Mar 9, 2012

Directed by Andrew Stanton. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Mark Strong, and Willem Dafoe.

This year has seen the release of two CGI heavy “space alien” super heroes, Thor and Green Lantern. Each hoped we’d believe its expansive home planet habitats with out of this world color, scale, and imagery. But their over reach and reliance on the animated is what eventually did them in. John Carter brings a more tangible, ethereal feel to the a similar theme but using desert locations it feels otherworldly yet completely realistic. Elsewhere the music and audio mix of this trailer is spectacular though I’m not as sure of Taylor Kitsch as the lead.
