Red Band Trailer: God Bless America - April 6

Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait. Starring Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr, and Mackenzie Brooke Smith.

Fair warning, this preview (and presumably the movie) presents a string of extremely inconsequential acts of uber-violence. But for those with the stomach to handle Goldthwait’s demented view of the world, treasures of insight await. The spot’s glorification of said violence can be off putting but the director’s short yet proven track record is enough for me to go with it. These kind of movies can only end one way (the protagonists fall prey to their own trigger-happiness), so it will be interesting to see how he twists it.

Trailer: 30 Minutes or Less (Red Band teaser) - Aug 12

Directed by Ruben Fleischer, written by Michael Diliberti. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, and Nick Swardson.

It’s only a teaser but already it’s showing to be a promising comedy. The action aspect caught me completely off guard. In fact it’s kind of like Speed meets Pineapple Express, and I mean that in a good way. Aziz is translating nicely to the big screen, and you can’t go wrong comedically with the rest of the cast. I’m excited to see more from this movie.

Side note: completely wrong font to use for the film.

Trailer: The Change-Up (Red Band, NSFW) - Aug 5

Directed by David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers), written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (The Hangover). Starring Ryan Reynolds, Jason Batemen, Olivia Wilde, and Leslie Mann.

Yes it’s a body switching movie. Yes, this isn’t anything new. But can you resist the uptight Batemen swapping with the loose and charming Reynolds? You have to admit it’s good casting. And it’s R rated which is always a plus (though I could have done without the red band gags in the trailer (towards the end)). Not to mention from the director and writers’ past credits.

Verdict: may not be there opening weekend but am interested and think it could pleasantly surprise, if it doesn’t get trite in its concept. Which it most likely will.

Red Band Trailer: ‘Machete’ (Probably NSFW)

Combine this with Piranha 3D and you have Grindhouse 2.0. While I’ve heard some grumblings about Machete, this red band trailer only amped up my anticipation.
