Theatrical Trailer: American Reunion | ComingSoon

Trailer: Struck By Lightning

Directed by Brian Dannelly, written by and starring Chris Colfer, with Rebel Wilson, Allison Janney, Christina Hendricks, Sarah Hyland, and Dermott Mulroney.

If you had any concern that Colfer would be type cast after Glee and have a tough time separating himself from Kurt, guess again. He’s already an entertainment renaissance man and this trailer proves that he’s not merely riding the buzz of his show, there’s solid chops backing him up. Lightning has a quirky indie vibe and brings to mind the recent Charlie Bartlet but draws upon John Hughes as well. Best of all there seems to be something deeper going on, something almost mumblecore. And you can’t go wrong with the cast, so good stuff all around.

Trailer: Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter - June 22

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, starring Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell, Dominic Coopers, Alan Tudyk, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

It’s a stunning trailer but chalk that up to Bekmambetov and his stylization. I’m very concerned that this could go the way of Cowboys & Aliens, in that the concept and title are so ludicrous it may turn people off. Hopefully, it won’t actually be bad like Cowboys & Aliens though.

Trailer: Seeking a Friend at the End of the World - June 22

Written and directed by Lorene Scafaria. Starring Steve Carell, Keira Knightley, T.J. Miller, Melanie Lynskey, Amy Schumer, Adam Brody, Gillian Jacobs, Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, Connie Britton, and Patton Oswalt.

Despite the fact that Keira Knightley is playing the manic-pixie-dream-girliest manic pixie dream girl to ever grace the silver screen, and Steve Carell is playing the same hopeless shlub he’s portrayed in countless past films, this has some promise. The jokes are funny, the ensemble casting is smart, and the concept is just the right amount of crazy. The trailer hits its beats with surprising accuracy, for example as I thought to myself, “why aren’t people looting,” there was looting. The opening is beautifully calculated and understated. This could be quite good.

Trailer: The Bourne Legacy - Aug 3

Directed by Tony Gilroy. Starring Jeremy Renner, achel Weisz, Edward Norton, and Stacy Keach.

Terrible trailers come out every week. Predictable, loud, routine, derivative trailers have developed a language all their own, one that audiences are able to comprehend. And they’ve become a punchline just the same. This spot is one of the rare few that bucks the trend (for the most part) and it does it well. The sliding panels are a clever trick that add anticipation into the fabric of the trailer. I know Ed Norton’s voice, now let me see his face, damnit. Good stuff. I don’t know that I need to go see this movie anymore than when I did before seeing the trailer, but at least it did something.

Trailer: The Amazing Spider-Man - July 3

LAWYER UP, ASSHOLE!

LIZARD UP ASSHOLE!

Trailer: The Amazing Spider-Man - July 3

Directed by Marc Webb, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field.

I feel bad for the marketers (and the filmmakers to some extent) who have to pitch this movie under the shadow of Sam Raimi’s trilogy. The approach is overstated: flashy technology, dark tones, a little bit more bite in the wit, but in a lot of ways it comes out joyless. I will see it regardless and this trailer only reinstates the casting choice of Garfield as Peter Parker, but thin ice, Webb, thin ice.

Cougar Town Season Three 10 Minute Preview

Heavy spoiler alert! Lawrence, interestingly enough, released this mega trailer on his own as a way for fans to give their friends and newbies alike an idea of the show. Previewing forward by giving 10 minutes of an upcoming season may not have been the best strategy but it won’t hurt getting more eyeballs.

Teaser: True Blood Season 5 | TV Line

Red Band Trailer: God Bless America - April 6

Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait. Starring Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr, and Mackenzie Brooke Smith.

Fair warning, this preview (and presumably the movie) presents a string of extremely inconsequential acts of uber-violence. But for those with the stomach to handle Goldthwait’s demented view of the world, treasures of insight await. The spot’s glorification of said violence can be off putting but the director’s short yet proven track record is enough for me to go with it. These kind of movies can only end one way (the protagonists fall prey to their own trigger-happiness), so it will be interesting to see how he twists it.

30 Rock’s Fake Movie Trailer For “MLK Day” | BuzzFeed

Starring Andrew Samberg.

Trailer: Jeff, Who Lives at Home - March 16

Written and directed by the Duplass Brothers. Starring Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Susan Sarandon, and Judy Greer.

Any concerns I had over bad marketing is being put aside by this trailer. It’s pitched as exactly what it is and hopefully, if they’re smart, audiences will get on board. There’s no reason not to trust the Duplass brothers or these performers but the trailer doesn’t give a lot to invite you in. For now my interest lies on the talent as this spot while agreeable did nothing for me either way.
