ICYMI

Great news everyone! I’m writing pop culture opinion pieces for PolicyMic now. Naturally, my first one is about a cappella — which is a lot bigger than you think.

There is something inherently lame about a cappella singing. This may be because of its roots in barbershop or the high technical barrier required for entry. Or maybe it’s the fact that a group of people standing around mimicking instruments is kind of ridiculous. How could voices ever stand up to actual instruments, especially in the face of an era benchmarked by electronic sound? That said, what a cappella groups can do is undeniably distinct. When done well, a cappella definitely does stand up. As we move through the 2010s a cappella is seeing its moment in the sun. Popular culture is finally catching up to what so many fans already knew: a cappella is worthy of our iPods, our downloads, our views. If it weren’t for the internet and viral videos, the genre would not be nearly as successful.

5 A Cappella Groups You Shouldn’t Be Embarrassed To Listen To | VH1 Tuner

With the one year anniversary of Pitch Perfect coming up and the return of Glee, it’s time talk about making music with our mouths. While fans of collegiate a cappella know that this type of singing is nothing new, “be boop ba do dos” and “do da do das” are finally going mainstream. Here are five groups you should be (proudly) listening to.

(Yes, I’m fully aware that Rebel Wilson is not part of a real group. Just go with it.)

Solid list. If you want to get real serious though check out The Swingle Singers, MO5AIC, Musae, Mabyebop, Postyr Project, Overboard and Arora (formerly Sonos).

The Sons of Pitches - Wonderwall acappella. The group brought this song to the ICCA finals this past weekend.

This is what’s going to make a TV show about this stuff interesting, I think: everybody is so talented and capable, but they’re engaged in a sort of battle to the death to pull this very niche-y subculture either toward half-joking and crowd-pleasing or toward the desire to be taken seriously, and it’s not clear at all who’s winning.

Aca-awesome.

Noteworthy (BYU) - “Without You” by Usher & “I Will Wait” by Mumford & Sons Mashup

Watch: The Maccabeats’ a cappella ’Les Misérables' medley tells the story of Passover

Very clever re imagining of the songs, all without changing most of the lyrics.
