J.J. Abrams will direct the next “Star Wars” film for Disney, taking stewardship of one of Hollywood’s most iconic and lucrative film franchises, an individual with knowledge of the production told TheWrap.
“Argo” director Ben Affleck was also in contention, another individual with knowledge of the talks told TheWrap.

Our sources have been telling us for a while now that Steven Spielberg was really pushing Kennedy to hire Abrams. The story goes that Abrams was the first filmmaker approached after Spielberg, but was very hesitant. Kennedy talked to other directors including Ben Affleck and also Matthew Vaughn who may have pitched to have Chloë Grace Moretz in the lead role. Our sources say that Spielberg was instrumental in convincing Abrams and Kennedy to make it happen.

In a piece of casting news likely to induce nerdgasms the world over, Variety reports that Robocop star Peter Weller has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek sequel.
Weller is the latest star to join the cast, following in the footsteps of Alice Eve, who was added to the existing ensemble last week. The news comes in the wake of a new casting twist, in which Abrams has put a question mark over the involvement of Benicio Del Toro…
Because of course he does. Abrams will be teaming with screenwriter Billy Ray for ‘Super Cloverfield Trek 8: Impossible’ (tentative title).
Currently titled Revolution, details remain limited other than being described as an “epic adventure thriller.” Abrams, Kripke and Bryan Burk are executive-producing with Abrams’ production company Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television.
Attention impatient sequelphiles: Vulture can confirm that J.J. Abrams has finally committed to shooting Star Trek 2. Insiders familiar with the director’s plans tell Vulture that pre-production is underway, that the script will be done by month’s end and that Abrams will start shooting this winter.
