Oscar Nominated Kristen Wiig, Oscar Nominated Melissa McCarthy
This is where I come down on the question I addressed earlier. Probably an unpopular opinion. Oh well.
It’s no secret that many are jumping on the Melissa McCarthy bandwagon - what with her scene stealing movie performances, Emmy wins, SNL showcases, and unearthed viral hits. The Groundlings vet is finally getting her due, and most comedy fans and savvy viewers alike wouldn’t disagree that she deserves it. At this point it’s reasonable to say that many of them would likely follow her to whatever she does next.
But what about that hit sitcom she’s currently on, from the guy who gave us Two and A Half Men? 14 million people watch Mike and Molly weekly, but how many of those 14 million also watch Parks and Rec or Community? McCarthy has found a loyalty within comedy circles and the industry, that perhaps ignore her most frequent output.
So my question is (amongst many), if you consider yourself a comedy nerd or a lover of quality television, is this new found love of Melissa McCarthy enough to bring you to Mike and Molly? Is it fair to say, “I love Melissa McCarthy but refuse to watch Mike and Molly?”
