Trailer: ‘Jersey Boys' - June 20

Directed by Clint Eastwood, starring John Lloyd Young, Christopher Walken, Vincent Piazza, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda and Mike Doyle.

I’m pleasantly surprised by this. The movie could have gone way too far with the camp (as I think the show is a really campy musical), but by the trailer, it seems to be blending the right amounts of realism and fantasy. The breaking of the fourth wall looks pretty good on camera in fact. I’m definitely more interested than I was previously.

Final Trailer: ‘X-Men Days of Future Past' - May 23

Trailer: ‘Gone Girl' - Oct. 3

Directed by David Fincher, starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry,  Neil Patrick Harris, Missi Pyle, Patrick Fugit, Casey Wilson and Emily Ratajkowski.

Fincher seems to have a style of trailer that is just as signature as his green-tinted shooting. The song seems odd at first, but plays perfect counterpoint to the rising tension of the second half of the spot. Affleck seems to be doing a lot here as well, which could go either way, but for now is promising. I’m not entirely on board, as Fincher has always been good at trailers, but optimistic.

Trailer: ‘Wish I Was Here' - July 25

Written by Zach Braff and Adam Braff, directed by Zach Braff, starring Braff, Mandy Patinkin, Kate Hudson, Donald Faison, Jim Parsons, Josh Gad, Joey King and Pierce Gagnon.

There seems to be a very clear straight line from ‘Garden State’ to this. The visuals and themes presented in this mostly visual trailer echo Braff’s first effort, but take a step forward to expand upon it. The Shins song (obviously) goes a long way in setting this up as well. All that said, your mileage may vary depending on how you feel about Braff.

A rebooted ‘TMNT’ was inevitable, and as a concept I’m okay with it, but this trailer falls very flat. It’s mostly boiler plate comic-book movie action and destruction, paired with the usual nonsensical dialogue about heroes and lame attempts at humor. The CG characters look good and aren’t too jarring, but the last shot is a bit “uncanny valley.” Also, spires falling! You gotta have a spire falling!
